Plants That Became Family
For as long as we can remember, plants have never been just decorations in our home—they've been companions that quietly grew alongside our family. Just as our home has always welcomed pets, it has almost always been filled with greenery. Some plants stayed with us for decades, some flowered only for a season, and some surprised us with fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Each one has added its own little story to our lives.
Gardening has been a part of our family for generations. Growing up, our home was filled with flowering plants, fruit trees, herbs, and seasonal vegetables. There was always something blooming, ripening, or waiting to be planted. We never aimed to create a large garden; we simply enjoyed growing enough to experience the joy of nurturing life and harvesting something with our own hands in our balconies, varandas or roof tops.
Over the years, a few plants have become our absolute favourites, not only because they are beautiful, but because they remind us of home.
Some of Our Green Companions
Sacred Tulsi holds a very special place in our home. Beyond its spiritual significance, it has been cherished for generations for its medicinal value and remains one of the plants we care for with great affection in our hindu religion.
Giloy has always fascinated us because of its long history in Ayurveda. Watching its vine climb and flourish is a reminder of how many traditional medicinal plants have been valued and passed down through generations. We enjoy learning about its place in traditional wellness while appreciating it as another beautiful living part of our garden.
Curry Leaves have always been especially close to our hearts. Fresh leaves picked straight from the plant make everyday cooking feel just a little more special.
Sadabahar (Periwinkle) is one of those flowers that seems determined to bloom no matter what the weather brings. Its colourful flowers brighten even the hottest summer days.
Rain Lilies are magical in their own way. After the first showers, they suddenly appear as if nature has quietly performed a little miracle overnight.
Palm Plants instantly make any corner feel greener and more alive. They remind us that even a single plant can transform the atmosphere of a room.
Sukh Shanti (Peace Lily) is one of those elegant plants that brings both beauty and tranquillity. Its rich green leaves and white blooms make it a lovely addition to peaceful indoor spaces.
Hibiscus is impossible to ignore when it is in full bloom. Its large, vibrant flowers attract butterflies, brighten the garden, and remind us how rewarding patience in gardening can be.
Money Plant has always been one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow. Watching its vines climb walls, shelves, and balconies reminds us that growth often happens quietly over time.
Green Chillies are one of the most satisfying plants to grow. There is something special about picking fresh chillies straight from the plant while cooking. Even a single healthy chilli plant can produce generously throughout the season, making it a favourite in our home garden.
These are only a few of the plants that have become part of our everyday lives. Some are admired for their beauty, some for their usefulness, some for their cultural significance, and others simply because they make us smile whenever we see a new leaf or a fresh bloom.
As with everything else we write about on this blog, we are lifelong learners—not gardening experts. We enjoy experimenting, learning from both successes and failures, and sharing our experiences along the way. We hope that by sharing our gardening journey, we inspire others to discover the simple happiness that comes from growing something with their own hands.
